Economical’s Plans for Demutualization and Your Insurance Policy
As your insurance broker, JACK & CO. LTD. works with you to select the insurance company with the best combination of protection and price to meet your insurance needs. We believe in providing choice to our clients and that sometimes means switching your insurance provider. Your insurance is currently with Economical Insurance and we want to make sure that you are aware of the potential impact that the changes may have on you.
A number of years ago, Economical Insurance indicated that they wish to demutualize. What exactly does demutualization mean? You can find a definition here.
It has been a long road for Economical, as new federal regulations needed to be passed. Very recently, the federal government released draft regulations. This means that Economical’s goal of demutualization is getting closer to reality.
Economical Insurance shared the next steps involved in the process to demutualize in their March 2nd, 2015 news bulletin. Here, Economical provides on overview of draft Property and Casualty demutualization regulations.
Economical has also asked its brokers to share its plans with current policyholders. With no definitive information available at this time, it is very difficult for us to explain what impact demutualization may have on clients that currently hold an insurance policy with Economical Insurance.
It is our understanding that as part of the move away from mutual policyholders to common shares, policyholders may receive a financial benefit in the form of cash or shares. For this reason, you may be interested in maintaining the Economical policies you already have. Newly issued policies are not likely to qualify. Insureds who cancel their Economical policies or allow them to expire without renewal will not be eligible policyholders (based on the draft regulations) and thus it is highly unlikely they would receive any benefits if there is a demutualization.
The draft regulations provide some direction on which policyholders may be affected, but it is important to understand that these are draft regulations and the definition of eligibility could change in the final regulations. Until those regulations are final, it is not possible to provide definitive advice regarding any potential financial benefit to retaining your Economical policy. However, we want to make sure that you are aware of what is happening with Economical Insurance.
As an Economical Insurance broker, JACK & CO. LTD. does not have access to inside information. If you are interested in learning more, we recommend that you visit Economical’s demutualization website, or you can contact Economical at firstname.lastname@example.org, 1-866-302-6046 (toll free).
